Port Askaig

Looking towards the Paps of Jura from Port Askaig

Port Askaig is located on the Sound of Islay on the Eastern side of the island.

It is quite likely that you’ll arrive here when travelling by ferry (The other terminal being located at Port Ellen). Port Askaig is served by a number of routes, with crossings from Jura, Colonsay, Kennacraig & Oban.

As you approach, you will see the impressive Dunlossit Castle up on the hill, home to the Schroder family.

The port was originaly unable to take the new breed of larger ferry, so during the period between 2006 and 2009 there was a major re-development. However, the village still remains very small, with just a hotel, shop and a few houses.

The Islay lifeboat is berthed here, along with a number of fishing boats.

Port Askaig is just a ten minute drive from Ardnahoe Shepherds hut and only five minutes from the Caol Ila Distillery.
