Oystercatchers at Uskentuie

Uskentuie is located at the northern tip of Loch Indaal. It’s a great beach for bird watching. Here are a couple of Oystercatchers on the rocks.

The Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) can be found on most of Islays beaches. You’re more likely to hear their distinctive ‘peep-ing’ call, before you see them.

Despite the name, oystercatchers usually eat cockles and mussels, rather than oysters. The shells are prised open with the birds distinctive red bill.
